I had finished it on Friday: the circle of the room, the twelve niches in plan, the developed section at 1:20, the angles figured to a tenth of a degree, the depths to the centimeter, and at the bottom right the empty space of the title block, which I had not filled in.
Inês arrived on Sunday at eleven with bread and two coffees in paper cups, like someone coming in to work. She unfolded the sheet on the table, set the two cups on the top corners, and looked at it, and she took a long time over it.
"There," she said at last, with a fingernail, without touching the paper. "Say it."
"Eleven niches at thirty degrees, give or take two or three minutes, over three hundred and thirty degrees of arc. Sixty-two centimeters deep, to within a centimeter, flat backs, faces worked with a broad bevel. The twelfth at thirty-four, forty-seven deep, back bulging toward north, attacked with the point."
