In 2021 I moved four hundred and eleven bags. I take eight percent of the store price plus the tax refund, which comes to between three hundred and twenty and nine hundred euros a piece depending on the house, and a client who orders four times a year is worth more than a manager's salary. I did this job for nine years out of a two-room flat at 14 rue Civiale, third floor, with a kitchen scale, a fifty-meter roll of bubble wrap and one main client who lives in Hangzhou.
The mornings are always the same. Seven fifty outside 30 avenue Montaigne, two students I pay fifty euros each because one ID card only buys one piece a day, a coffee on the corner of rue de Marignan, the tax refund counter in the basement of 40 boulevard Haussmann at four in the afternoon, and in the evening we flatten the boxes, we keep the ribbons, we weigh, we tape. Thirty-two kilos to a carton. The place at the back of the courtyard, rue Civiale, takes shipments until ten at night.
On March 14th, 2021, I sold for twenty-eight thousand eight hundred yuan, as new, a beige tote that a client in Wenzhou had carried for eleven months and that I had bought back from her for twelve thousand in January, because her husband had made her give it up. A craftsman at 71 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine redid the corners and the right handle for two hundred and sixty euros. I bought a new dust bag, forty euros. I photographed a receipt that did not belong to it, at an angle, a little blurred, the way you photograph a receipt when you're in a hurry.
